Hey there YOGI’s,
Let me ask you something—how do you feel about joy?
Honestly, I used to run from it.
Joy made me uncomfortable, almost like it wasn’t mine to hold onto. It felt scary, like if I welcomed it in, I’d just be waiting for it to disappear.
Have you ever felt that way? It's like a gnawing, unsettled discomfort when things are good, because what if it doesn’t last or what if it hurts when it ends?
Yoga philosophy talks about Santosha, the practice of contentment, of being at peace with what is. Contentment doesn’t mean pretending things are always easy or perfect. It’s about accepting the moment fully, without expectation, and opening ourselves to whatever gifts come—especially joy.
I realized that my fear of joy was rooted in expectation.
If I let myself feel it, wouldn’t I also be setting myself up for disappointment when it went away?
But here’s the thing—joy doesn’t need our control, and it definitely doesn’t require us to “deserve” it. We can welcome it with open arms, just like we do each breath in our practice.
That’s what I’m learning to do now—let joy be part of my flow, not something to hold onto tightly or push away.
If this resonates with you, I encourage you to try it in your practice. As you move through each pose, or even sit in stillness, notice when joy arises. Maybe it’s in the release of a deep breath or in the amazing strength of your body. Let yourself feel it, even if it feels vulnerable.
There’s a beautiful poem that speaks to this: "Joy Chose You" by Donna Ashworth. It’s a reminder that joy isn’t something we chase—it’s something that chooses us, if we’re open to it.
The beautiful part? The more we welcome joy, the more we realize it’s always been there, waiting patiently for us.
We don't have to do anything to be worthy of it, our mere existence makes us worthy. We just have to soften, open our hearts, and let it in.
And when we do, we begin to see that joy is not a rare visitor, but a constant companion ready to lift us, even in the smallest moments.
Be well,
Megan Margherio
